The story so far.
Kate Cuthbert was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. Having studied both Interior and Furniture Design, she moved to designing and making jewellery before successfully landing in the art of analogue collage where she creates under the name ‘satin&tat’.
Kate's artistic process is organic and free flowing. She allows her collages to develop naturally and resists overworking them. She favours a clean and minimal aesthetic with negative space featuring prominently in her work. ‘Print Magazine’ described her as “a mastermind of minimalistic geometric designs” noting “her layouts are sleek and clean and often feature vivid, bright colours.”
Kate creates collages that invite viewers to pause and unwind. She works intuitively, letting the materials guide her to express her experiences. She gives found images a new life while playing with themes of colour, form and fashion in her work.
Kate has, and continues to, exhibit in Australia. Her work has also been exhibited in The United States, Europe and Scandinavia.
Kate has been published alongside international collage artists in the prestigious ‘Collage Collective Co Annual’ in both 2015 and 2017, New York publication ‘We The People-Satellite Journal’ as well as Italian ‘Oltre’ magazine. In 2021 US ‘Print Magazine’ named her Instagram account as one of the ‘Top Five Collage Artists To Follow On Instagram’. In 2024, Kate was awarded a Bronze award in the Contemporary Collage Magazine Awards- Fashion Series category.
Kate has collaborated with Australian and international collage artists including Zach Collins (USA), Itchi (FRANCE), Karen Lynch (AUS), Kellette Elliott (USA) and Franz Samsa (ITALY) to name a few. She collaborated with Australian label ‘Kitty Came Home’ on a range of clutches, journals and jewellery launched in 2021.
As well as private commissions, Kate's past clients include ‘Long Story Short’, ‘The Miscreant Vintners’, Spanish fashion designer Cristina Ruiz, Australian stationery brand ‘Earth Greetings’ and luxury UK fashion label, ‘Ted Baker’. Kate has created album art for ‘The Vanity Cure’ and ‘The Wanderers’ and her collage artwork has been commissioned by ‘The Wall Street Journal’.
In 2019 Kate created ‘minima’, an offshoot of ‘satin&tat’, where she creates collages exclusively exploring shape and colour.
‘satin&tat’ has been a fixture on the Adelaide market scene for the past 10 years where she sells a range of gallery quality giclée prints, greeting cards and other collage goodies. Kate also teaches collage workshops for all ages.
